Founder Led Content: How to Build Visibility Without Paying for It
Most founders we know are not natural performers. They did not start a company because they wanted to be on camera. They started it because they had an idea worth building.
But somewhere between the idea and the fundraise, a quiet gap opens up: nobody knows who they are. And when nobody knows who you are, raising capital, attracting talent, and building partnerships all get harder than they need to be.
The good news is that fixing this does not require a PR budget, a speaking agent, or a spot on a conference panel that costs $5,000 to secure.
The Pay-to-Play Trap
There is an entire industry built around selling founders visibility.
Sponsored conference speaking slots. Paid podcast placements. Thought leadership packages that put your name next to a logo for a fee. Award programs where the nomination process conveniently comes with a price tag.
Some of these have legitimate value. Most do not, and almost none of them are necessary at the early stage.
The founders who build real, lasting visibility are not the ones who bought their way onto a stage. They are the ones who showed up consistently in the places where their audience actually spends time, said something worth hearing, and kept doing it.
That approach costs time, not money. For a lean startup, that is the better trade.
Founder-led Content is the New Cold Outreach
The economics of founder visibility have shifted in a fundamental way. A well-placed article, interview, or live panel now does what a hundred cold emails cannot: it puts you in front of the right people on your terms, before you need anything from them.
At Arcanum Ventures, we have seen this play out directly. Founders have found us through The Forum, our weekly live panel on X, and through The BOOM ROOM, our flagship podcast. Some came in as guests and later became portfolio companies. The relationship started on the show, not in a pitch meeting.
There is normally no easy path for a founder to build a genuine relationship with a VC outside of a cold application or a chance encounter at an event. Founder-led content creates a third door. One that stays open around the clock and does not require an introduction.
We have also had LP conversations that started because investors had been following our shows, recaps, and newsletter for months before we ever spoke. The first call felt like a second meeting. And in a few cases, we interviewed a founder on the podcast, loved the idea, continued the conversation off camera, and ended up investing. The interview was the pitch. It just did not look like one.
None of that happens without consistent, free, founder-led content.
Where the Real Leverage Is
You do not need a stage or a budget. You don’t need to be an aspiring Hollywood film actor. You just need a point of view and somewhere to put it.
Here is where the leverage actually lives:
X Spaces and Live Audio Panels
These are one of the most underused tools available to founders right now. The barrier to entry is zero. You can host a conversation with smart people in your space, invite an audience, and demonstrate your thinking in real time. You can even try your hand at hosting your own branded show. Let your voice be heard!
At Arcanum, The Forum runs weekly on X and has consistently been one of our best sources of inbound relationships, both from founders and investors who showed up as listeners.
Podcast Guests Appearances
These are free, scalable, and highly targeted. There are thousands of shows actively looking for credible guests in every vertical. A single appearance on a podcast your ideal investor or customer already listens to is worth more than most paid placements. The key is being selective and showing up with something genuinely useful to say rather than a rehearsed pitch.
Video interviews especially build the kind of familiarity that text alone cannot. Seeing a founder think through a problem on camera, handle a tough question, or explain their space with clarity creates a level of trust that compounds over time. This is partially why we host the BOOM ROOM podcast to bring on founders in our industry. It does not need to be polished. It needs to be real.
Writing Articles and Thought Leadership Posts
It may be true that readership is significantly down in the age of AI, but this is still the most durable content type. Whether it’s a newsletter or a posting cadence on LinkedIn, it’s essential to paint yourself and your startup as a thought leader in a particular area (or multiple). A well-argued article on a topic you know better than anyone else will keep working for months or years after you publish it. It builds your authority in search, gives journalists and podcasters a reason to reach out, and signals to investors that you understand your space at depth.
You Do Not Have to Love It
Here is the part nobody says out loud: most of the founders doing this well do not enjoy it.
Carmelo Giuliano, one of the co-founder of Arcanum Ventures, will be the first to tell you he is shy, dislikes public speaking, and would rather not be on camera. Ever.
But Arcanum made a deliberate business decision. Articles and social posts alone were not moving the needle. People need to get used to your face, hear your voice, and feel like they already know you before they ever reach out. Founder visibility is how you earn that familiarity before you need it, and the best channels to do that are all free.
Some of the founders in our ecosystem do this better than others. The ones who show up consistently, share what they are building, and put their thinking out into the world attract more inbound, more warm introductions, and more opportunities. Not because they are more talented, but because they are more known.
The Decision Comes First
You do not need a media company or a production team. You need to decide that being known is part of the job, and then find the free format that works for you. This sort of thinking can transform a company, creating a natural business development incentive and making it ten times easier to build your network.
The compounding starts the day you begin. The cost of waiting is that it has already started for someone else.
At Arcanum Ventures, we host and produce several shows such as The FORUM, the BOOM ROOM, and the Utopia in Beta podcast. Additionally, we work closely with external content creators to feature thought pieces and bring a wider audience to the tech world’s brightest minds.
If you want to create content with Arcanum Ventures, join a panel, be featured in an interview. or pitch an idea to our media arm, fill out a form, and our team will get back to you as soon as we can!
